Who we are
Peers Understanding Strategies for Healing and Helping (PUSHH) was founded in 2023 by lifelong Newark resident and social worker Denisah Williamson to create safe spaces where young people can grow, lead, and thrive. Established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, PUSHH is deeply connected to the Newark community and committed to fostering youth leadership and healing.
PUSHH believes in the power of peer support. The same strategies that youth learn through our programs can help them heal themselves while also giving them the tools to support and help others in their community.
By understanding and emphasizing resilience and leadership, PUSHH provides alternatives to environments marked by violence and trauma, equipping youth ages 14–24 with the tools to create safer, healthier communities.
OUR MISSION
PUSHH's mission is to empower youth to make positive choices that improve their well-being through safe, supportive programs that build resilience, growth, and self-awareness. Our strategies include life skills training, healing circles, advocacy, and community engagement opportunities that encourage young people to use their strengths to positively impact their families, schools, peers, and neighborhoods.
Our Vision
I thought I changed it on here PUSHH envisions a Newark where every young person feels safe, supported, and empowered to lead, heal, and build strong communities rooted in resilience, advocacy, and collective change.
Our purpose
To reduce harm and increase healing by equipping youth with life skills, emotional support, leadership training, and community-building opportunities.

Our Approach
-
PUSHH equips youth with the essential skills needed to navigate real-life challenges with confidence and clarity. Through structured workshops and hands-on activities, youth learn effective communication, emotional regulation, problem-solving, financial basics, time management, healthy relationships, and goal-setting. These skills help participants build a strong foundation for personal growth, academic success, and future employment. Our life skills training empowers youth to make informed decisions that strengthen their overall well-being.

Description Healing is most powerful when it happens in community. PUSHH uses a peer-support model where youth learn to hold safe, compassionate spaces for themselves and others. Through healing circles, guided reflection, and shared experiences, participants explore emotions, build resilience, and strengthen their sense of belonging. Youth leaders are trained to facilitate discussions that promote trust, empathy, and self-awareness. This approach helps reduce stigma around mental health and fosters an environment where healing is shared, normalized, and celebrated.text goes here

PUSHH develops youth leaders who understand their power, voice, and influence within their communities. Through fellowships and advocacy training, participants learn how to support peers and families navigating the legal system, lead community campaigns, and address systemic inequities. Youth gain experience in public speaking, organizing, decision-making, and civic engagement. This leadership pathway empowers them to become influencers, change-makers, and advocates who use their strengths to positively impact schools, neighborhoods, and citywide systems.
-
We believe that youth thrive when they are connected to a supportive, engaged community. PUSHH provides opportunities for young people to participate in outreach, community events, organizing efforts, and violence prevention initiatives. Through hands-on involvement, youth build relationships, strengthen their sense of purpose, and contribute to the well-being of their neighborhoods. Community engagement also helps young people feel seen, valued, and connected—turning them into active participants in community improvement rather than passive observers.
-
PUSHH recognizes the impact of trauma—such as violence, instability, and systemic injustice—on young people’s mental, emotional, and physical health. Our staff uses trauma-informed practices that emphasize safety, trust, cultural sensitivity, choice, and empowerment. We meet youth where they are, offering counseling, crisis support, and emotional care with compassion and understanding. By acknowledging trauma and prioritizing healing, we help youth build resilience, develop coping skills, and reclaim control over their personal narratives.
